Maddocks: I expect stable Government and constructive dialogue in the Parliament

The new government has already expressed its commitment to Montenegro’s NATO membership, accession to the European Union and international obligations, but the British ambassador to Montenegro, Ms Karen Maddocks, does not want to speculate whether this will be the case in practice. In an interview for Nova M, Ms Maddocks says that people expect a stable government, but also a constructive dialogue in the Assembly between the new government and the Democratic Party of Socialists.

“Sound democracy is a lively and sometimes uncomfortable process because it allows different perspectives to be heard and can bring changes. The economic situation due to coronavirus is a global challenge. The British Embassy is already working on resolving some issues, such as the ZZZCG project to modernize their systems. We have offered support in the future diversification of the economy in the energy and innovation sectors. We are ready to provide further assistance to the new government”, Ms Maddocks said.

She points out that the Government has already expressed its commitment to NATO membership, EU accession and international obligations.

“People need a stable government and society, consistent rules and enforcement so that the economy can grow and thrive,” she added.

She states that parts of the rule of law system are a strong judiciary, professional media, efficient police, a strengthened civil society and an Parliament accountable to the people.

Ambassador said she “wants to see more women leaders, leaders with disabilities, leaders who are openly gay, as well as leaders from different minorities”.

“We need brave people. The UK is still on the same path as Montenegro. I believe the DPS has a lot to offer during the next chapter of Montenegro, their presence in the Parliament means they can provide a good challenge to government policies which should contribute to better “I will stay in touch with all parties in the Parliament, including the DPS,” the ambassador added.
