The Prime Minister, Duško Marković, said that defending spirit of parliamentarism in Montenegro in fact means defending the existence of our state. He said this during the reunion on the occasion of the Day of Parliamentarism. He pointed out that the name of Montenegro was erased at the so called Podgorica Assembly.

“And even today, there are those who would do just the same” , said Marković.

Today, on the occasion of 112th anniversary of the formation of the first National Assembly of Montenegro, the history showed that defending the spirit of parliamentarism is in fact defending our statehood.

“We’re witnesses that there are those who would like to celebrate the Podgorica Assembly, glorifying the erasure of Montenegrin state. The message is clear- they would do the same even today. I honestly hope that we have all learned that democratic lesson – that the country is not saved and improved by rushing onto the Parliament or by boycotting parliamentary life. All the contrary! In that sense, and right from this place, on this ceremonial occasion, I am making an appeal to all the actors of political life in our country to never forget that”, said Marković.

As he says, parliament is the place where different political cultures coexist whose pluralism should widen our horizons while providing the quality that no autonomous system of political value can provide during the decision-making process.

“Decisions of our Parliament are the common need of all citizens of Montenegro. I’d like to confirm one more time, that ever since 1878, when Montenegro was recognized as multi-ethnic and multi-confessional country, the position of minority groups has been organized with more sensibility than it is the case in the surrounding countries, even in the developed European countries”, said Marković.

The relationship between the executive power and the Parliament reflects the relationship between the Government and the citizens. That relationship should be based on respect, responsibility, and commitment to what the Constitution guarantees us.

Talking about our Parliament, the PM that it had such an honor to adopt the Law on the Confirmation of the North-Atlantic Treaty, as a testimony of great political achievements reached by the previous governments.

“Finally, I’d like to point out that another challenge will be in front of our parliamentarism. Our MPs will soon have their seats in the European Parliament, since we will be the next EU Member State. That way, Montenegro will strengthen its position  among the most developed European nations. That position it dreamed of that day, 112 years ago, when the first session of the Montenegrin parliament was held in Cetinje”, said Marković.
