Men kill out of self-interest, women out of jealousy

According to data from the Monstat statistics agency, 4,000 criminal offences were recorded in 2016. Out of the total number, 156 women and as many as 1,960 men were convicted of breaking the law.

Statistics also show the drop in the number of registered juvenile perpetrators: in 2016, 235 of them were recorded, which is by 3.7% less than in 2015.

A lawyer Zdravko Begovic says that aggravated criminal offences were mainly committed by men, but women are “equal” when it comes to thefts.

He says that organised groups from Serbia and Bulgaria come to Montenegrin coast on summers and steal on beaches. However, they are mostly caught by police.

When it comes to drugs smuggling, Begovic says that such criminal offences are being committed constantly since there has recently been an increase in demand for narcotics.

Commenting on the felonies, particularly murders, Begovic says that men mostly kill out of self-interest.

“Women almost never do such things out of self-interest. They rather resort to murder if they are attacked or abused… or sometimes out of jealousy,” Begovic said.

According to him, before the court women always tell what exactly happened. They do not tend to take advantage of investigation failures.

Asked about recent murders in Montenegro, Begovic said that they were a taboo. He suggested making greater efforts to identify perpetrators and those who ordered the murders by forming special department for investigating such well-planned executions.

He also says that paedophilia cases deserve special attention.

“Such cases are mostly associated with less developed parts of the country, but they also happen in urban areas. A kind of offence register should be established,” Begovic said.
