Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said there are no serious disputes weighing on relations between Croatia and Montenegro, describing ties between the two countries as generally positive. He said he maintains good communication with Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic and Prime Minister Milojko Spajic.
Milanovic downplayed the significance of the dispute over the training ship Jadran, saying it should not dominate bilateral relations, although he reiterated Croatia’s claim to the vessel. He argued that resolving the border demarcation issue, particularly concerning Prevlaka, is more important and said Montenegro’s leadership will need the political strength to settle the matter.
Commenting on other unresolved issues, including compensation for former detainees and the Morinj camp, Milanovic said some form of gesture would be appropriate. Asked whether Croatia could block Montenegro’s EU accession over outstanding bilateral issues, he said that question should be directed to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.
