Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic, leading the country’s delegation at the NATO Summit in The Hague, reaffirmed that Montenegro is a credible NATO member. He announced that Montenegro, along with other allies, will support a key decision to increase defence spending from the current 2% of GDP to 3.5% for direct defence costs, plus an additional 1.5% of GDP for broader security purposes.
Milatovic emphasised that this decision is crucial for strengthening NATO’s collective defence capabilities and ensuring the security of citizens and economies. He expressed confidence that the summit will result in historic decisions that will make the Alliance stronger and more resilient for future generations. On the sidelines of the summit, Milatovic also held a brief conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The summit marks the first to be chaired by NATO’s new Secretary General, Mark Rutte. Milatovic stressed Montenegro’s commitment to the Alliance and highlighted the importance of joint decision-making in addressing today’s security challenges.
