The announcement of the Swiss company Tara Resources that it will reopen the Brskovo lead and zinc mine in the foreseeable future wasn’t welcomed either by Mojkovac environmentalists, its residents or the municipality leaders. Not so much because of the mine itself, but because of the investor’s intention to deposit waste materials in the new tailings pond, located at the border of the Biogradska Gora national park. Mojkovac mayor Ranko Mišnić says that the idea won’t pass, which could mean that the mine won’t be reopened, Dnevne Novine reports.
Last month, the Swiss company sent a request to the Government of Montenegro to expand the exploitation project to the area of Tvrdi Potok, at the border of the national park.
Behind that request, which was first announced by the Government and then removed from the agenda, there was an intention to build a new tailings pond right there.
The Swiss company, which bought concessions for exploration and possible exploitation of ore deposits 3 years ago from an Australian company, announced the investment of €150m in the new mine and the employment of 450 workers.
