Mogherini to Medojevic: Responsible politicians serve citizens through institutions

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, replied to the protest letter of Movement for Changes (PzP) leader Nebojsa Medojevic. She made it clear to DF – the path towards the EU membership is not always easy, but an inclusive political dialogue is crucial for the future of Montenegro, for its democracy and well-being of its citizens.

Mogherini said that she appreciated Medojevic’s commitment to the Montenegro’s European integration process.

As I said yesterday in my speech in Parliament, I know that the support to European integration goes beyond party positions and that the path towards the EU membership really should serve as a strong motivation to overcome all political disputes that are a natural thing in a democracy. This is what people of Montenegro, who overwhelmingly support the country’s membership in the Union, want,” said Mogherini.

She is sorry because DF MPs did not attend the Parliament session yesterday and because they failed to use opportunity for a constructive exchange of views.

“In your letter, you have called into mind that your party MPs had previously chaired the Committee for European Integration. This further strengthens me in the belief that Parliament is a place where you and all other political entities can give the best contribution to the future of Montenegro in the EU. Not because the EU or anyone else says that it is right, but because, as responsible politicians, we all know that we serve interests of our citizens the best through democratic institutions,” said Mogherini.

As she added, she is pleased to hear they share the same goal – the struggle for democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights.

“These are key values of the EU and I can only welcome your commitment to these ideals. The road to EU membership is not always easy, but an inclusive political dialogue is crucial for the future of Montenegro, for its democracy and well-being of its citizens. Finally, I hope that we will be able to continue our dialogue in the future. The EU door remains open and I look forward to discussing the European future of Montenegro with all political parties, whether in opposition or in power,” said Mogherini.
