Apart from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Montenegro also has its representative at the West Point Military Academy – the oldest in America. Nikola Nikcevic is finishing his third year at the Academy, majoring in chemical engineering. He says for the Voice of America that his duties are numerous and that they start early in the morning.
This 22-year-old man from Niksic came to West Point in 2021, as only the second cadet from Montenegro, after Nevena Nikolic, who graduated in 2019. At the beginning, he faced the same difficulties as other Montenegrins at American military academies – above all language.
Despite all the challenges, the previous three years were successful for the Montenegrin cadet.
Colonel Cory James is the deputy head of the chemistry and science department at West Point and one of Nikola’s professors. During his career, he taught many cadets from all over America and the world. Nikola, he says, is at the very top.
West Point, located in the town of the same name in the state of New York, is the oldest military academy in America, founded in 1802.
Nikola will graduate from the Academy in May 2025. He says that he is looking forward to returning to Montenegro, but that he will miss the friendships he made.
