This deal worth 600 million euros interests Italian company Terna, which earlier this year began setting up the power cable to Montenegro, and the Tunisian company for electricity and gas, STEG, writes Dnevne Novine daily.
Development ministers of Italy and Tunisia in early May wrote to he high representative of EU foreign policy, Federica Mogherini, European Energy Commissioner Maros Sefcovic and the EU Commissioner Johannes Han, requiring their support and financial assistance for the project to link these two countries via the Mediterranean power cable of about 200 kilometers quoted the Italian media.
Due to great importance this project would have for both countries, ministers hope to receive financial support from the EU, through the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSA). Upon completion of this multimillion project, Montenegro too could see some benefit and profit.
Right now, Terna’s power cable to Montenegro is being assembled from the Italian side, while our country launched construction of a substation in Lastva Grbaljska, to which the cable will be attached. Electricity via the undersea cable could start going from Montenegro to Italy by the end of 2017, from where it could be redirected to other EU countries or even Tunisia – should the aforementioned project come to realization.
What is most important for our country is that Montenegro is an energy bridge through which other Balkan countries will be able to offer their excess electricity to the European Union.
