Montenegro – bright spot of the region

According to the latest Corruption Perception Index, level of corruption in Western Balkans states is still very high.

In the list of 180 world states, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Kosovo and  Albania are below average and are among states with pretty high level of corruption.

Montenegro is in a slightly better position and it’s the only state that has made progress.

Transparency International Organization ranks states by the number of points. Those states that are closer to 100 are states with low levels of corruption. In the WB, all states, apart from Montenegro, have less than 40 points.

In its report, Transparency draws attention to two Balkan states. Bosnia and Herzegovina is mentioned in negative context and Kosovo arouses high expectations.

Globally, all states who have high level of corruption have the problem with the same trends that have an impact on the corruption.

Results show that majority of states still fail to address the corruption problem efficiently.

Governments must urgently address corrupting role of big money in political party financing and the undue influence it exerts on our political systems”, said the chair of TI, Mrs Delia Ferreira Rubio.

Corruption Perception Index for 2019 shows surprisingly low improvement.

The only effective way of suppressing corruption is reducing money flows in politics and promoting inclusive political decision-making process.

Highest-level frauds and bribery are some of the reasons why people are fed up with corrupt politicians and institutions.

Denmark and New Zealand are still the highest scoring states.

TI points out that Western Europe and the European region have the highest concentration of corruption.

Even the best performing states are not immune to corruption, TI warns.

The USA earned its lowest score on the CPI list in eight years.

Somalia is the most corrupt state in 2019.
