At today’s meeting of the Board of Directors of the European Payment Council, a decision was made that the conditions for Montenegro to join the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) have been met, the Ministry of Finance announced.
“With this decision, legal prerequisites have been created for banks operating in Montenegro to access the zone, in which payment transactions can be made in the country and abroad without or with minimal fees. In the following period, the banking sector, in cooperation with the Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG), will work on operational activities for the implementation of this Decision”, the announcement states.
It is added that this is one of the measures of early integration by which the Government, the Ministry of Finance and the CBCG enabled the citizens and the economy to feel the benefits of the EU Single Market even before entering the European Union.
“This makes Montenegro the first country in the Balkans to join SEPA. For our country, SEPA membership represents a confirmation of a positive reputation, adequate regulation and stability of the banking system”, says the announcement.
