Starting from August, 1st, 2020, Montenegro should be completely clear of cassette bombs which filled part of the territory during NATO intervention, that is, bombing of the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, in 1999. The aim of the bombing was to force the President of Serbia, Slobodan Milošević , to give up on ethnic cleansing of Albanians in Kosovo and so that the mass crimes against civilians be prevented.
The Memorandum, which was recently approved by the Government, and which was signed by the Ministry of Interior Affairs with the Norwegian national help, defines that this is the so called humanitarian demining, clearing the remaining parts of the cassette ammunition in the territory of Golubovci, Tuzi and Rožaje.
“This zone that had been filled with cassette bombs during the bombing was military demined long time ago. But, the humanitarian demining has never been done. It’e expensive and we didn’t have money for that job”, says Radovan Popović, expert for explosives.
There is no data on who is going to be in charge for the demining but according to unofficial information, this task is delegated to the specialized company from Serbia.
