Moscow criticizes Trump over signing the protocol

After US President Donald Tramp signed Montenegro’s NATO accession protocol two days ago, Moscow has responded. The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that Trump continues a policy of “inertia” reflecting the logic of confrontation in Europe.

“We consider this step as a manifestation of inertia in Washington’s policy, reflecting the logic of confrontation on the European continent, creating new dividing lines,” the ministry says in a statement on its website.

The statement says that Montenegro is pushed into NATO “without taking into account the opinion of the people”, assessing that Montenegro’s accession to NATO is “a deep mistake”, since it is not in the interest of the people and harms stability in the Balkans and in Europe as a whole, Beta news agency reports.

Trump signed the protocol after it was ratified in the Senate on 28 March.
