Mayor of Podgorica, Sasa Mujovic, says there must be no delays when it comes to the construction of the wastewater treatment facility in Botun, warning that if physical obstacles arise, he’ll inform both Prime Minister, Milojko Spajic, and the government about it and they’ll make the final decision, gradski.me reports.
Mr Mujovic points out that KfW loan funds and WBIF grants are available only until the end of the year, and that any change of location would cause serious delays. The facility, planned for Botun near the KAP industrial zone, is a key step toward closing EU negotiation Chapter 27 on environmental protection.
Despite assurances that the plant won’t do harm to the environment, local residents have voiced strong opposition, citing past negative experiences with KAP’s pollution. Mayor Mujovic acknowledged that mistrust stems from decades of environmental damage and weak community engagement during the project’s planning.
He adds the city is now focusing on obtaining construction permits, relocating power lines, and continuing dialogue with residents, expressing his confidence that “reason will prevail over politics.”
