Nine criminal charges over desecration of state symbols

Since the beginning of the year, Montenegrin police have received five cases of desecration of state symbols while nine persons have been charged on suspicion of damaging the reputation of the State of Montenegro.

During investigative activities police identified 10 persons who committed the criminal offence of desecration of state symbols. One person was charged for violating Law on Public Order and Peace.

The last case of desecration of state symbols was reported on 23 May in Bijelo Polje when three young men destroyed 13 Montenegrin flags. After hearing before the state prosecutor and judge, two of them were ordered detention in custody for 30 days.

In accordance with the Criminal Code, person who exposes country or its symbols to public scorn and ridicule shall be punished with a fine or one-year prison sentence.
