Once MNE knocks on EU’s door, no one will say ‘no’

Jakša Šćekić

The outcomes of the recent Berlin Summit are pretty favorable to Montenegro as the enlargement package is unlikely to happen, and everything you should do now is work on the internal democratization, freedom of media and independent justice system. In addition, you should focus on closing the negotiation chapters and become an example of good neighborly cooperation in the region. Therefore, you do your part of the job and when knocking on the EU’s door, no one will say ‘no’, Belgrade journalist, Jakša Šćekić, told in an interview with Dnevne Novine, a daily.

“What matters is that the Summit was held and that it gathered the world’s leaders. Its purpose, as Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron clearly denoted, was not to offer solutions but to tell every country what would be their next steps and what they should do for the Western Balkans as a whole,” said Mr Šćekić.

The most important thing for Montenegro, according to him, was that once again it was confirmed that no country would enter the EU without putting in place reforms and meeting certain standards.

As for the statement of France’s President Macron who warned against hasty enlargement, Mr Šćekić said: “I’m not sure he was skeptical. We should be realistic. Would you allow any WB country to enter the EU now? – You wouldn’t. It’s true Montenegro is a lead candidate for EU accession but there’s still lot to do in this context.”
