Parliament will decide on NATO accession soon

The Speaker of Parliament of Montenegro, Ivan Brajovic, announced that the highest legislative body would decide on NATO accession protocol “very soon”.

That will be Montenegro’s obligation after US President Donald Trump approves Montenegro’s membership in the alliance (which the US Senate confirmed on Tuesday night) and after Spanish Senate (upper house) confirms the decision of the Congress of Deputies (the lower house).

Brajovic congratulated the Parliament and government of Montenegro before the first PM question time in the Parliament.

“I believe … all well-meaning citizens are satisfied with the news on ratification,” Brajovic said.

“I think that, although small country, Montenegro will certainly contribute to the quality of the alliance. We expect the procedure in the Spanish Parliament to be swiftly completed and that we will decide about the issue soon. This will seal the independence of our country and contribute to the stability of Montenegro and the region,” said Brajovic.

Brajovic says that the Parliament’s decision will be legitimate even if the opposition boycotts it.

“We will have more than the absolute majority. I think that citizens also decided about NATO when voting in the October elections,” Brajovic told reporters after the PM question time.
