Peach picking in the company 13 Jul-Plantaže has officially started! Even though last year results showed better growth, 300,000 kg of peaches have been picked so far, and the plan is to harvest 600,000 kg, writes Pobjeda daily.
According to Mr Dušan Kankaraš, Director of Vine-growing and Fruit-growing production in Plantaže, early peaches planted on around 20 hectares of land would probably be damaged due to the heavy rainfall in May, but that won’t affect the company itself as it intends to use them for producing rakija.
“We currently have around 40 workers for harvest, which would intensify over the next week when where are going to need 20 more workers. It’s obvious we lack workforce and that’s the problem every single year,” emphasized Mr Kankaraš.
Workers start harvesting early in the morning – from 5 am until noon – and if they pick 3.5 kg of peaches, they earn 0.18 cent.
“If you are a good peach picker, you can earn up to 30 euro, while the average earning is 16 euro. Workers who do not live in Podgorica are ensured three meals and accommodation, while those from Podgorica have organized transport,” he said.
The table grape harvest will start in 15 days.
