Due to high temperatures that went over 40 degrees Celsius in Podgorica during July, river Cijevna whose water creates ‘Niagara waterfall’ dried out.
Even the beach on ‘Niagara waterfall’ that is full of swimmers during summer months is empty because of the lack of water.
According to residents of Kuce Rakica, a suburb where ‘Niagara waterfall’ is situated, it hasn’t happened for a long time that the river goes dry in July.
“It would usually happen some time after 20th of August. Due to high temperatures, this year it happened on 16th of July”, said one of the residents to agency Anadolija.
Even the restaurant that is right next to the waterfall has fewer guests due to lack of water.
“People come to see the waterfall but there is no water right now. There were many swimmers on Cijevna this time last year, but that is not the case this year”, said one of the waiters from the restaurant at ‘Niagara waterfall’.
It seems that this dry period has the heaviest toll on ducks and geese. These feathery animals don’t cope easily with the lack of water, so a hose was installed in the nearby restaurant to bring the water to dring to ducks and geese.
‘Niagara waterfall’ is located four kilometres from the center of Podgorica. This touristic place is visited by a couple of thousands people a year.
Waterfall was built around 150 years ago, with the intention of building a watermill for wheat grinding.
