Rakočević: Dialogue is the solution

Nikola Rakočević

Member of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), Mr Nikola Rakočević, says that formation of the new parliamentary committee on electoral reform is not purposeful. In a statement for Dan, Mr Rakočević said the answer should be looked for in the Parliament, through parliamentary procedure, in a transparent way, within permanent working bodies of the Montenegro’s Parliament and in plenum. Mr Rakočević points out that ongoing boycotts could only lead to boycotting citizens and political decisions.

“The motive for re-establishment of the dialogue between the government and the opposition is the Law on the Election of MPs and Councilors which hasn’t been adopted yet. That’s the key electoral law and the solutions it stipulates could serve as platform for the dialogue with the opposition. Also, media laws, which have been referred to the Parliament, are a motive for the government-opposition dialogue and an opportunity for the opposition to demonstrate seriousness and to take part in the process of the improvement of those solutions through parliamentary procedure”, said Mr Rakočević.

He stresses that responsibility in the process of the improvement of electoral ambiance should be assumed by both opposition and the government.

“Boycotting elections, in the situation in which the government is open to dialogue and agreement, is an irrational and incomprehensible political reason of our competition. In democratically mature societies, opposition fights in legitimate and mindful ways. In Montenegro, opposition sticks to looser models and refuses to change. Therefore, the solution lies in the dialogue, not in the obstruction thereof”, said Mr Rakočević.
