Reckless drivers and lack of control still major problems on roads

Despite a multitude of activities and efforts by the Montenegrin traffic police, road safety has been assessed as unsatisfactory in 2024, the Road Safety Report, analyzed by competent bodies, suggests. The report, which evaluates last year’s traffic conditions, has been submitted to the Parliament of Montenegro for adoption.

According to official data, 75 people lost their lives in car crashes last year, which is a 3.8% decrease compared to 2023. However, the report raises concern over the most vulnerable age groups: young people aged 21 to 35 ( 24 deaths), and people over 65 with 18 recorded deaths.

Forensic analysis shows the main causes of death on the roads were excessive speed, driving in the opposite lane, being under the influence of drink or drugs while driving, not wearing a seat belt, driver distraction, and using a mobile phone while driving.

Even though some preventive and repressive measures have come into force, including media campaigns, fines, detentions and placing harsh restrictions for drivers who don’t follow the rules, the number of reckless drivers on roads is still high.
