Scuric on Abazovic’s 7 airports: Crazy idea and stupidity

Alen Šćuric

In an interview for CdM, aviation expert and analyst from Croatia Alen Scuric has called the plan presented yesterday by Caretaker PM Dritan Abazovic on the construction of 7 airports in Montenegro insane and stupid.

“Any airport other than those in Podgorica and Tivat is pure stupidity”, warns Scuric.

He explains why the idea presented in the Draft Spatial Plan is crazy.

“The construction of the airport costs at least €100m. These are huge costs. And that is €100m. Then you will give €2m for all the expenses incurred by the airport. And on the other hand, you need €150m for the airports in Podgorica and Tivat, and you want to give them in concession because you don’t have that money. It’s a truly incredible story – the idea of 7 new airports, regardless of whether they are small sports airports or the standard ones”, Scuric points out.

He clarifies that only the two airports existing in Montenegro can be commercially profitable.

“Any other airport in Montenegro is a total failure. To talk about the airport in Niksic really doesn’t make any sense. The same applies to Berane. Who would that airport be built for? Who would fly to or from Berane airport, surrounded by the mountains, outside of all passenger flows, in the middle of nowhere. Believe me, this is all a fairy tale for small children”, says Scuric.

The question arises, he adds, who the airport in Ulcinj would be built for. Well, it really doesn’t make any sense or logic, he stresses.

Scuric clarifies that Montenegro could build an airport a little further away from Podgorica and a little closer to the coast, which would be strategically smart.
