Second chance: Becic will run for mayor of Podgorica?

The leader of the Democrats Aleksa Becic may have been a candidate for the mayor of Podgorica in May after he gave up his presidential candidacy.

If he decides to run for the post, which will be Becic’s second attempt to become Podgorica mayor.

In 2014, the leader of the Democrats was a candidate for the mayor and leader of SNP’s candidates list “Mladost. Mudrost. Hrabrost.” (Youth. Wisdom. Courage.). The list won 14,776 votes and eight councillor seats in City Council four years ago.

As CdM finds out, the Democrats have done several surveys lately. Based on the results, the party estimated that this is not the right moment for “Becic to be spent in the presidential race”.

In addition to the surveys, CdM’s sources say that experienced “political players in Democratic Montenegro (former SNP staff)” believe that it is a right moment for Becic to try to come to the position of Podgorica mayor. Currently the post is held by Slavoljub Stijepovic.

According to CdM’s sources, it was almost certain that Becic would not be supported by the entire opposition in the presidential elections. In this situation, the risk of getting a title of a loser was too high. Therefore, this idea, after much consideration, was abandoned.

The party bodies have agreed that they should focus on Podgorica, where Becic has great chances.

The Podgorica elections will be the most significant for the opposition. If the opposition won the local elections, that would be the way to snap parliamentary elections and the domino effect for opposition’s victorious series.

Becic believes that he can win the elections in Podgorica.

He was city councillor for many years, he is well aware of the situation in the City of Podgorica, and, according to all surveys, he is one of the most popular politicians in the country.
