Seventy six abortions because babies were girls

Public Health Institute revealed that in 2016, there were 763 intentional abortions in Montenegro. By comparing Monstat’s data on the numbers of girls and boys born in Montenegro, it is easy to establish that a significant number of abortions were carried out because mothers were carrying girls. That number is, on average, 76 gender motivated abortions.

Monstat’s data shows that 10% more boys are born in Montenegro on average. A natural ratio between girls and boys would be 102 to 100. Official statistics, however, shows that this ratio is far from normal. Over the past 15 years, 109 boys were born for every 100 girls.

According to the latest data from the Public Health Institute, a total of 1,271 abortions were registered in 2016. The institute points out that a significantly higher number of abortions is estimated than the records of health institutions show.

According to official data, Montenegro currently lacks 3,000 women in reproductive age. Monstat statistics show that 113 boys and 100 girls were born in 2009; there were 110 male infants and 100 female in 2001, 2002 and 2014, whereas 109.9 boys were born per 100 girls in 2015.
