Today, Montenegro celebrates Njegos Day as an official state holiday, and on that occasion, 13 and 14 November are non-working days. This is the first time that Montenegro celebrates Njegos Day as a national cultural holiday.
On this day in 1813, Petar II Petrovic Njegos, a Montenegrin bishop, poet, philosopher and statesman, was born in Njegusi.
As a statesman, he laid the foundations of the modern Montenegrin state, established the executive power and the Senate, organized the courts, and introduced taxes. During his reign, the first printing house was founded in Cetinje back in 1834 and the first school was built.
Petar II Petrovic Njegos, one of the most significant figures in the history of Montenegrin literature and culture, died on the 19 October 1851, according to the old calendar, and on 31 October 1851, according to the new one.
On the occasion of the national holiday on 13 November – Njegos Day, the Montenegrin holiday of culture, non-working days are Monday and Tuesday, that is, 13 and 14 November.
State bodies, local self-government bodies, public institutions, public companies and other entities that perform activities of public interest are obliged to ensure the performance of work on holidays, the interruption of which could have harmful consequences for citizens or the state.
