Sundays off crucial for women and families

Montenegro is considering the introduction of free Sunday in the trade sector. The group of trade businesses propose Sundays off and the Trade Committe of Montenegro’s Chamber of Commerce backed the idea.

Political analyst Predrag Drecun told CdM this would be a significant change in end users and tradesmen’s habits as they have been used to working on Sundays.

“This will probably affect the revenues, but I believe everything will soon fall into the rightful place and people will start shopping other days of weekend, on Saturday or Friday. We need to wait for three months in order to be able to comment on this matter and see how this model will function,” Drecun was adamant.

The Democrats’ vice-president, Zdenka Popović, told CdM she believes the deal between businessmen and tradesmen is unlikely to happen. “In this specific case, the interests of employers and tradesmen collide and it‘d be very difficult to reach an agreement. In democratic societies, people have their Sundays off long time ago. The main problem of free Sunday for employers working legally could be the grey economy which would probably start to flourish.”

The Union of Free Trade Unions of Montenegro is totally in support of this proposal. They don’t see why it shouldn’t be implemented and emphasize that a Sunday off would preserve family as the basic social unit of society.
