Veljović: Most gang leaders are behind bars

During the panel discussion with the students of the University Donja Gorica, the chief of the National Police, Mr Veselin Veljović, told that most criminal gang leaders in Montenegro had been arrested and those still at large would be behind bars soon, reported Dnevne Novine, a daily.

Organized crime exists in Montenegro just like in every other modern country, and there’s no place without it, Mr Veljović said.

“All those wanting to show Montenegro as a source of organized crime do that for some other reasons, ideas, views or goals. We should use facts,” Mr Veljović was adamant.

He stressed that Montenegro had efficient answers and noticeable results in fighting organized crime. “Montenegro and its institutions, police and justice system put up a fierce struggle against organized crime. Criminal gangs that used to exist are now dissolved and we are happy to be able to say this.”

On the media reports on members of drug gangs, Mr Veljović said the media often failed to deliver exact results of the National Police in this context. “It often happens, not only when it comes to the police but the other state authorities as well, that good news is not so good and that the local crime news is much more interesting material for the media.”
