The current ruling elite, created after the elections on 30 August 2020, is responsible for the fact that Montenegro did not stop the galloping growth of fuel prices by reducing excise taxes. According to the announcements, the fuel, which is now at the historic maximum in the country, could increase dramatically, by as much as 20 cents. If that happens, it will be a new price shock for the citizens of Montenegro.
To make everything even more dramatic, we have an example when the State Secretary for Energy and Mining Marko Perunovic in the RTCG’s Link show two days ago stated completely incorrect data on the amount of excise duty on fuel.
“Today, the excise tax on a liter of petrol is 36 cents, and on diesel 26 cents. That means that if the 20% reduction is adopted, the price of petrol would be lower by 7 cents, and diesel by 5.5 cents. In today’s market conditions, that reduction of the maximum 20% will not have a significant impact”, he said, among other things.
However, the figures announced by Perunovic are incorrect.
Citizens should know that the excise tax on a liter of petrol is 54.9 cents, and on diesel 44 cents, which means that a reduction of 20% would mean a very significant 10.98 cents lower price of petrol and 8.8 cents lower price of diesel.
Also, Montenegro has been controlling the retail price of petroleum products since 2002, which has proven to be a very good decision.
