Why does terrorism arise?

Former NATO supreme allied commander Wesley Clark explains why terrorism arises, assessing that we are the biggest challenge for ourselves.

“Young people need to find meaning in their lives. If the young do not find the significance for their lives they are going to extremes,” he says speaking at the panel on security within the Global Citizen Forum that is held in Sveti Stefan .

As he says, the world is facing many challenges, such as terrorism.

“In particular, there is a possibility that the north attacks the south, in terms of North Korea. On that example, we have to change the situation for the better,” he said.

Clark adds that from a historical perspective, the United States never expected to win the Cold War.

“We thought that the states of Yugoslavia and beautiful Montenegro would always live under hard-line regimes, but it did not happen. We promoted democracy and it was a threat for some governments,” he said.

The secretary of the national Security Council and former head of the Police Directorate, Veselin Veljovic, also spoke at the panel.

He began his presentation by quoting Isaac Newton.

“I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me,” said Veljovic.

During the panel he pointed to two challenges that are the biggest threats – terrorism and nuclear threats.

“Nuclear threats are the strongest and greatest threats today. Now there are chemical weapons in a close environment,” said Veljovic.

He emphasised that stability is characterized by the safety of citizens, and that Montenegro is a safe country.

According to him, the role of the media is very important and said that they should act in a proper way to avoid becoming weapons of terrorism.
