According to the latest global university rankings, QS World University Ranking 2015/2016, the University of Ljubljana is ranked in a band from 551-600 and it is the highest ranked university in the former Yugoslavia, according to the Anadolu Agency (AA).
The University of Zagreb is ranked in a band from 701-800, as well as the University of Belgrade.
According to this year rankings, none of the universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo are among the top 800 universities in the world.
Of the countries in the wider region, the University of Vienna is best rated – 153th best ranked university, followed by the Vienna University of Technology (197th), the University of Innsbruck (295th), the National Technical University of Athens (376th) and the Karl-Franzens-University Graz ranked in a band from 431-440 of the list.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its position as the top ranked university in the world, followed by Harvard, Cambridge, Stanford, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Oxford, University College London (UCL), Imperial College London, ETH Zurich and the University in Chicago.
Out of the top 20 universities in the world, 10 are located in the United States, five in the Great Britain, two in Switzerland, two in Singapore and one in Australia. Among the top 100 in the world there are universities from the countries such as France, Canada, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Republic, Taiwan, Ireland, Belgium and Finland.
The QS World University Ranking is currently the largest portal in the world engaged in research and comparing the quality and success of universities in the world.
Their researchers compile a comprehensive list by analysing the reputation of a total of 800 best universities in the world, contacting with academic staff. Every year, about 34,000 people are interviewed and asked to assess research and educational capacities of each university separately.
