Nikolic: Why does Commissioner Várhelyi oppose assessments from EC Report even though being its member?

Andrija Nikolić

The statement of the EU Enlargement Commissioner, Olivér Várhelyi, suggesting that signing of the Fundamental Agreement between Montenegro and SPC didn’t negatively affect the reforms and the EC report on Montenegro is totally in defiance of the final assessment from the EC report, the DPS MP and Deputy President of the International Relations and Emigrants Board, has said.

“By denying one of the key assessments of the EC for Montenegro, which clearly says that the government’s signature on the agreement with the SPC escalated tensions in the Montenegrin society, Mr Várhelyi damaged the reputation of the EC, made the work of its administration pointless and publicly challenged the integrity of the position he covers. Unfortunately, this is not the first time he shows such an attitude towards Montenegro,” Mr Nikolic emphasized.

According to him, soon after taking over as the EC enlargement commissioner, Mr Várhelyi abolished the organizational unit for Montenegro and merged it with Serbia’s.
