Last year, the Health Insurance Fund allocated about €6m for sick leave, while about a million working days were lost. This is what the Health Insurance Fund has told CdM. The longest sick leave, according to data from the Fund’s information system, began in February 2015, which continues with minor interruptions.

“In 2021, close to €6.5m has been allocated for sick leave, which is half a million more than in 2022”, the Fund points out.

From January to October 2022, there were 12,461 cases of sick leave over 30 days.

“Pregnancy maintenance and threatened abortion are the most common reasons for temporary inability to work, longer than a month. The insured most often went on sick leave due to orthopedic, neurological, psychological, infectious and pulmonary diseases, as well as due to Covid-19”, according to the Fund.

The Law on Compulsory Health Insurance, which has been in force since 1 January 2022, provides for the possibility that in cases of prolonged sick leave, where the employer expresses doubt that the temporary absence is not justified, i.e., that it lasts an inappropriately long time, the Ministry of Health can be contacted and it can be submitted a request to initiate a procedure for checking temporary incapacity for work.
