Agreement between Montenegro and Frontex enters into force

Agreement on the status of border cooperation between Montenegro and the EU came into force yesterday. The agreement will enable Frontex to carry out joint operations and deploy teams of border police and experts at borders between MNE and the EU.

Statement issued by the EC states that Montenegro remains responsible for the protection of its borders, while Frontex will provide technical and operational assistance.

The agreement also guarantees necessary protective measures to ensure complete respect for fundamental rights during operations.

The first Frontex operation in the country which is not EU member state was initiated in May 2019, in Albania. Similar agreements have been initiated with North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The agreement was also signed with Serbia in November last year.

Last year when the agreement was signed, Minister of Interior, Mr Mevludin Nuhodžić said that the Agreement represented strengthening successful and high-quality cooperation between MNE and the EU in the area of border security.

“Today we confirmed we are united in our mission to act together and come to grips with global security challenges such as illegal migrations, organized crime and terrorism. Only strong and well-protected state border can guarantee safety and security of citizens of Montenegro and entire Europe”, Mr Nuhodžić said.
