Artificial Intelligence (AI), that is, technology that enables machines and computers to simulate human activities such as decision-making, learning, planning and creativity, is becoming more and more common in everyday life. One thing is for sure – it’s going to bring great changes in the future. But in spite of the numerous advantages, it can be dangerous as it’s a powerful tool for spreading misinformation, i.e. the creation of convincing misinformation.
AI has been used worldwide in military systems, on social media as well, particularly for creating photos, in call centres where it replaces people in the communication with clients, in the media and blogs where they use AI for writing articles and news instead of journalists.
For this reason, people worldwide have been worried that AI can be a powerful tool for spreading fake news, as it happened following the coronavirus pandemic.
ChatGPT a powerful fake news creator
Earlier, Demostat reported that several years ago the US New York Times said the university researchers used ChatGPT to produce clean, convincing text that repeated conspiracy theories and misleading narratives. They wrote “the results — in writings formatted as news articles, essays and television scripts — were so troubling that the researchers minced no words.”
Today, ChatGPT is far more powerful and sophisticated. If it’s supplied with misinformation, it can produce convincing, clean variations on the content en masse within seconds, without disclosing its sources.
However, AI can be used effectively. In order to prevent the spread of misinformation, scientists have made the AI system able to register even the most convincing misinformation. One of them is the American program system called GROVER that can easily spot fake news thanks to sensational headlines.
