During his speech at the forum, Mr Cameron commented on the issue of Montenegro and its future membership in NATO. “It is important to emphasise the importance of NATO membership for a country, as well as obligations regarding necessary reforms and importance of public support. The political consensus on this issue is important, but the civic consensus is important as well. We have different parties in the UK, the parties willing to leave the EU and the ones that do not want that. However, we all agree about one – NATO membership is vitally important to British interests, we are an important part of the organisation, i.e., as I often put it, we have the largest military budget in Europe. The wider consensus you reach on this issue, the bigger role you would play in NATO and the member states would certainly give you even stronger support,” Cameron said.
Speaking at the forum in Bratislava, PM Djukanovic said that if we had a referendum on joining NATO, the option supporting the membership in the Alliance would win.
“At the moment, we do not think about organising the referendum. Our Constitution stipulates taking the decision in the Parliament. However, we have not finally defined the way of deciding on the matter after receiving the invitation,” PM Milo Djukanovic said.
At a special panel “Montenegro Knocking on NATO’s Door”, he said we expected invitation to join the Alliance by the end of the year.
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Djukanovic will have a number of bilateral meetings today.
