The President of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, says that he will comply with the Constitution and sign the amendments to the Law on the President. In an interview for the MINA agency, President Djukanovic has said that it is realistic to expect that the problems in Montenegro will have to be solved with the help of a mediator and that it is most logical that it will be someone from the European Union (EU).
Speaking about the way to solve the crisis, he says that he is not a supporter of introducing mediators into domestic political problems and that before the parliamentary elections in 2016, there was an idea that Montenegro should get a mediator.
“I think that the depth of the problems we are living in this phase of political life in Montenegro, with such arrogant disregard for the recommendations of relevant international institutions, inevitably conditions their resolution with the help of partners”, says President Djukanovic.
He has stated that it is most logical that it will be someone from the EU.
President Djukanovic points out that, if he receives the proposal again to appoint the leader of Demos Miodrag Lekic as the prime minister-designate, he will respect the Constitution.
He believes that the formation of another Government would be a new unsuccessful attempt by the parliamentary majority formed after the parliamentary elections on 30 August 2020.
President Djukanovic believes that it would be a completely failed attempt because it is very obvious, from many examples, that the unstable parliamentary majority is very fluid, unreliable and actually guided by some current and daily political interests.
He says that, on the other hand, the adoption of amendments to the Law on the President has caused a sharp confrontation between the Montenegrin parliamentary majority and its executive power with the international community, first of all, with the closest international partner – the EU.
President Djukanovic has added that he is afraid that the Government elected in this way cannot count on any partnership and cooperation with European institutions and with any EU member.
He believes that the first reaction, the cancellation of the EU-Montenegro Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee, is only a hint of the clear position that the EU takes in relation to the executive power of the candidate country, which, as he says, is boasting and trying to demonstrate some kind of absolute sovereignty.
“There is no longer such sovereignty, we are all interdependent. It is clear that the candidate countries, not only in the accession phase but also in the future when they become members, are dependent on some rules that exist and must be respected within that political family”, President Djukanovic has pointed out.
