Representatives of the Democratic People’s Party (DNP) in the Montenegrin government did not present their previously announced demands at today’s cabinet meeting, choosing instead to wait until Prime Minister Milojko Spajic is present. According to unofficial government sources, Deputy Prime Minister Milun Zogovic and Transport Minister Maja Vukicevic decided to postpone the move because Spajic is currently abroad attending the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Earlier in January, DNP abandoned plans to leave the government and instead conditioned its continued participation on a set of political and identity-related demands. These include constitutional changes to recognise Serbian as an official language, amendments to citizenship laws to allow dual citizenship with Serbia, changes to state symbols to declare the tricolour flag a “people’s flag,” and opening a broad dialogue on the wastewater treatment plant project in Botun, opposed by residents of Zeta in a recent referendum.
DNP has warned that if the government does not support these demands, its ministers will resign and the party will withdraw parliamentary support at both national and local levels. Meanwhile, DNP MP Dragan Bojovic has left the party but retained his parliamentary seat, citing disagreements over the party’s strategic direction while expressing support for fair compensation for communities affected by the planned wastewater facility.
