European Parliament endorses the enlargement policy and Montenegro should continue with its stable dynamics in the implementation of reforms so that it can be the next EU member, it was said in the meeting between Chief EU negotiator, Mr Aleksandar Drljević, and European Parliament’s P Rapporteur for Montenegro, Mr Tonino Picula.
During his visit to Brussels, Mr Drljević met with the new rapporteur for Montenegro and congratulated him on his new function.
Mr Drljević reiterated Montenegro’s firm commitment to EU membership, and reminded that the Government and all the institutions involved in the negotiation process were persistent in their intention of providing our country with position in the EU.
“We work hard on maintaining the continuity of our EU path. We expect positive response by the European Commission”, said Mr Drljević.
Mr Picula hailed the fact that Montenegro had made the greatest progress in the EU negotiations. He pointed out that he would commit to strengthening ties between Montenegro and the EU and that he would advocate for the principle of due progress based on countries’ individual result.
“I’ll be an ardent advocate of enlargement policy. It’s not just a technical issue, it’s also a political issue. Therefore, it is important that Montenegro, as leader in the negotiation process, continues to prove that it belongs to the EU”, said Mr Picula.
Interlocutors agreed that the integration of the Western Balkans was important for the preservation of peace and stability in the region and the entire European continent. They also touched on the fact that North Macedonia and Albania hadn’t started negotiation talks yet. They stated that the two countries shouldn’t be discouraged but motivated to implement internal reforms with greater determination.
