Western Balkans hasn’t got sustainable alternative to European and Euro-Atlantic integration. In that context, it is necessary to take the opportunity and bring the Balkans under European control. On the other side, Montenegro will remain reliable EU ally and a committed promoter of European values, Montenegro’s president, Mr Milo Đukanović, said in the meeting with the president of the European Council, Mr Charles Michel.
Mr Đukanović expressed satisfaction with the fact that Montenegro has continuous cooperation with the Council. Montenegro is encouraged by the messages coming from new institutions in Brussels.
President’s Office said that decisions of the March Council would confirm expectations and give new incentive to the enlargement policy.
Mr Michel stressed the importance of the informal dinner with WB leaders and thanked for the messages Mr Đukanović sent to EU officials.
He agrees with the selection of areas that need to be put in the focus- rule of law, education, better connection and infrastructure. Mr Michel said that we also needed joint strategy.
WB-EU relations are one of the priorities of the Council: new role of the EU political leadership and strong political will are very present and it is necessary to take every opportunity to make a decisive step towards the achievement of that goal. Council’s positive decision in March would be a strong signal and incentive to new European institutions, setting conditions for greater focus on stronger investment strategy that would be visible and tangible.
Mr Michel thanked Mr Đukanović for the detailed information about Montenegro’s priorities. In the context of the current issue related to the Law on Freedom of Religion, Mr Michel said he firmly believed that dialogue and understanding were key to overcoming the problem.
