Energy Community: Montenegro still has a leading role

Montenegro remains leader in the implementation of the EU reform measures concerning energy efficiency sector, according to the latest Secretariat implementation report.

Secretariat said that members of the Energy Community, including Serbia, Albania, Kosovo, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, had increased the percentage of implementation performance from 43 to 48%.

The Annual Report states that a specific number of thermal power plants could be closed at the beginning of next year. Therefore, thermal power plant Pljevlja will have to be closed next year. Energy Community states that it is necessary to modernize coal driven plants in order to meet limit values stipulated in the Directive on Industrial Emissions.

Ecological reconstruction of thermal power plant in Pljevlja is expected to begin next year. With the recovery of the first block, the working life of the plant should be 20 years longer. As far as the region is concerned, the 4th block in the thermal power plant in Tuzla could be shut down in May of 2021. According to EC, that could happen with three plants in Serbia too.

Secretariat director, Mr Janez Kopač, thinks the situation regarding coal plants is sticky in the Western Balkans and that contracting parties should urgently undertake measures to reduce harmful emissions. He also said that EC members should focus on energy efficiency and higher production of renewable energy.
