The Democratic Front (DF) is not a partner of Washington, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Special Envoy for the Region Gabriel Escobar has told the Voice of America.
There are still deep divisions in Montenegro, tensions between the ruling coalition and the opposition, but also tensions within the ruling coalition itself.
Asked what he sees as a solution to the political instability in Montenegro, which also affects its progress towards membership in the European Union, Escobar points out that it is not up to the United States to solve the tensions and problems of the ruling coalition within one NATO member.
“However, we have made it clear what we expect, and we hope that Montenegro will remain a Western-oriented country, a strong member of NATO and that it will continue to progress on the path to membership in the European Union. We have made it clear that we do not believe that all parties in the political spectrum meet these criteria. But in the meantime, we would like them to continue in that direction. Another complication is that we also believe that they should work very hard in the fight against corruption. These are our expectations. And how they will solve the current crisis really depends on both the country’s leaders and the voters”, states Escobar.
According to him, it is up to the Montenegrin leaders to make a decision on whether there will be a minority government.
