Commenting on the allegations of opponents of NATO integration, he said that he did not know how much money they had been given to run their campaign, the news agency MINA carried.
At a panel in Podgorica, attended by retired members of the Ministry of Interior, Garcevic said that Montenegro was in the final stage of accession to NATO.
“So far we have achieved significant results on that path and we have a very good reason to hope that everything will end positively on December 1st and 2nd, which has also been proved by the recent visit of the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg,” said Garcevic.
As announced by the Communication Team for NATO membership, Garcevic pointed out that it was the most important visit since Montenegro restored its independence.
Garcevic denied the allegations that millions were spent for campaign on NATO integrations.
He said the campaign cost €200,000, which Government allocated within the budget.
“In addition, we have a fund donated by Norway for campaign. The donation has not been used for these activities, but for conducting opinion poll surveys. What we do not know is how much money they (opponents of NATO) were given for campaign against the Alliance,” Garcevic said.
As it was said at the panel, membership in NATO would represent an encouragement for further negotiations with the European Union.
The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian Parliament, Zsolt Nemeth, said that experiences of countries such as Hungary could most convincingly prove that.
“In the last 16 years of being NATO member state, we have had the highest level of safety and security at the lowest cost,” he said, adding that in addition to the collective security, citizens felt the economic and every other progress.
According to Nemeth, Montenegro will share the same values from December when NATO invitation is expected to be sent.
He also emphasised the fact that Montenegro has a strong support of the United States.
“I want to tell you that we were all encouraged by the message of Joe Biden that the United States supports Montenegro’s membership in NATO,” said Nemeth.
