A cap on the price of food items has been removed as of May pressuring the citizens of Montenegro to cope with the rising cost of living. Whether and when does the Ministry of Economic Development plan to relaunch price reductions on certain food items – remains to be seen. They haven’t informed the public yet. The Union of Free Trade Unions and analysts agree the mentioned measures didn’t make a jot of difference but should have been kept at least for the most vulnerable categories of the society.
After the price reductions initiative ended in late April, the Ministry of Economic Development announced they would propose new measures by mid-May. To date, nothing has been done, while grocery prices overall continue to surge, citizens claim.
“Some items from the trade union consumer basket were part of the price reductions initiative, and. if we recall that we saw a decline in prices of the basic food items, there was an effect of it,” Marko Subotic of the Union of Free Trade Unions says.
The analyst, Mirza Muleskovic, notes “this initiative cannot cause a decline in prices in the long run and we must be aware of it.”
That being said, the Union of Free Trade Unions calls on decision makers to relaunch the initiative, criticizing the Government and recalling that they withdrew it ahead of last year’s summer season as well.
