Being a NATO Ally in this region, Montenegro is very important to us. As for the 2016 coup attempt, if I understand well, the trial will be repeated. It’s inappropriate to speculate on the ongoing legal proceedings, but you may be sure that the international community, the UK as well, will be closely monitoring it, just like the previous one, the UK Ambassador to Montenegro, Karen Maddocks, tells in an interview for Pobjeda daily.
Ms Maddocks also says it’s important that the countries of this region have good mutual connections in order to be able to continue work on closer integration within the Berlin process, which is being considered a step forward on the EU path.
On Minister Leposavić’s scandalous denial of the Srebrenica genocide and the fact that the parliament still hasn’t convened a session to dismiss him, she says: “The reason we have an embassy in Montenegro is to get a better understanding of the political situation in the country, the government’s priorities and polices. But, as I’ve already said, I won’t make assumptions about intentions of the government or individuals, as we’re going to assess them based on their actions”.
On the UK’s view concerning the proposed amendments to prosecutorial laws, the UK Ambassador notes: “We believe that it’s in the best interest of this country to continue to follow its EU path, and it’s encouraging to see that the government consults the EU about amendments to this law”.
Asked how UK investors were satisfied with the treatment in our country and ways to improve business environment so that more UK investors invest in Montenegro, she said a lot more had to be done in order to improve business environment in Montenegro, particularly improvements in the rule of law and fight against corruption.
