On Monday, the Uniprom KAP aluminium plant shut down the remaining 12 cells in the electrolysis plant, ending the production of primary aluminum in Montenegro after 52 years, Vijesti has learned.
In KAP, the plants for the production of billets-logs and silumina-alloys remained in operation, and the factory will import aluminum for the needs of their production.
The plant shut down most of the cells for production in December 2021, when Montenegro’s power supplier, EPCG, refused to supply it with electricity at the previous price of €44 per megawatt hour (MWh), because the stock prices were over €200.
Uniprom says that the government illegally took emission credits from Uniprom and assigned them to EPCG, contrary to the EU directive.
“The European Energy Community has already initiated the procedure, the damage is measured in tens of millions of euros, and after the EU report arrives, we will continue with further activities. Other KAP plants are working smoothly”, Uniprom says.
