On the proposal of the Chief State Prosecutor Ivica Stankovic, the Prosecutors Council on Tuesday elected Appellate Court Judge Milivoje Katnić the new chief special prosecutor.
Konjevic said a lot of effort was invested in the appointment of a special prosecutor, and that members of the Government, our society and international partners expect the consistent application of the law and use of all legal possibilities available to him and the new special prosecutor.
“We fulfilled a very important commitment from chapters 23 and 24, and have now created all the conditions for the elected special prosecutor and his deputies, the police and other law enforcement bodies, to give results in the field , thus contributing our country’s easier passage through the process of integration”, Konjevic told reporters at the UN Eco building, where the official start of the campaign “Respect life – return the arms” was marked, reports MINA.
Asked whether he expects better results of the fight against corruption, minister said:
“Legal and all other preconditions have been created. We have been waiting for appointment of the special prosecutor so that the Ministry and the Police administration can implement procedures in our authority. We are now creating necessary technical requirements for the special police team that will work with the Special Prosecutor”, said Konjevic.
According to him, the results are inevitably expected to be better than they were before.
“Let me remind you that since April 2013 until October 2014 we did not even have the Chief State Prosecutor (CSP), which in certain segments slowed some ongoing investigations and consequently, the results in this area. Since October, when we got the CSP, we have done a number of things, and all that is recognized in the reports that we receive from the European Commission”, said Konjevic.
As he said, election of the special prosecutor was one of five priorities whose realization, during recent visits by European officials, was scheduled before the end of July.
“This commitment has been realized, but it is only the beginning of the work of this institution, which, together with other law enforcement authorities, using all that is at its disposal, should give adequate results”, concluded Konjevic.
