The Parliament of Montenegro will discuss the Draft Law on Ratification of the North Atlantic Agreement in Cetinje today. The agreement provides the conditions for Montenegro’s accession to NATO. The government stated that prime minister Dusko Markovic would explain the draft law.
Of the opposition parties, only the Social Democratic Party (SDP) announced its MPs would attend the Parliament sitting. Democratic Front (DF) has scheduled a major rally in front of the Municipal Assembly building. The police have said they will not allow any incidents or traffic blockades.
The government said that the Euro-Atlantic integration and NATO membership had been one of the country’s strategic foreign policy priorities, since Montenegro independence restoration.
According to the government, NATO accession is particularly important bearing in mind the regional, but also wider political, economic and security context.
Following the adoption of the law and its entry into force, Montenegro will submit its instrument of ratification of the North Atlantic Agreement to the Government of the United States, which is the depositary of the agreement.
The date of receipt of the instrument of ratification shall be the date of Montenegro’s NATO membership.
