Montenegrin citizens serve prison sentences usually for drug trafficking and murders, the 2015 Council of Europe’s report on the situation in Montenegrin prisons showed. Average inmates’ age is 33 and the average daily cost per prisoner is €19.
One in four prisoners are serving a sentence for crimes related to drug trafficking, which is the seventh highest percentage in Europe and the average is 18.7%.
The second most common crime is murder. Almost one in five prisoners is in jail because of this crime. They are followed by those convicted for theft – 10% of prisoners. In 2014 the situation was different and even 32% of inmates were imprisoned for theft.
The number of prisoners that includes those in remand prison remained at almost the same level as in 2014 and it amounted to 1,100. It means that there are 176.8 prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants, which is well above the average in the Council of Europe member states, which amounts to 115.7.
