The Ministry of Regional and Investment Development and Cooperation with NGOs has published an updated register of political parties, showing Montenegro currently has 57 active political parties. The register includes parliamentary parties, political parties representing minority communities, local electoral rolls, as well as several newly established political organizations registered over the past two years.
According to data from the register, the oldest political parties that remain active were registered in 2004. They include the Croatian Civic Initiative (HGI), the Socialist People’s Party (SNP), the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS).
The number of political entities in Montenegro has steadily grown over the years. Alongside the country’s main parliamentary parties – including the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), the Europe Now Movement (PES), Democratic Montenegro, the New Serbian Democracy (NSD), the Democratic People’s Party (DNP), the Bosniak Party (BS), the Civic Movement URA and the Social Democrats (SD) – the register contains a large number of smaller political organizations and local movements.
In 2024, the Democratic Alternative of Montenegro, the League of Communists of Yugoslavia – League of Communists of Montenegro, the Party of European Progress and the Bosniak Democratic Movement were registered. During 2025, the Albanian Renaissance, the ‘Preokret’ Movement, the Bosniak Civic Alliance and the People’s Trust Movement were also entered into the register.
