A cruise ship flying the Dutch flag has reported an outbreak of an illness suspected to be caused by hantavirus, with three deaths. There were 147 people on board, including 88 passengers from many countries, among them Montenegro.
The Montenegrin Institute of Public Health says it currently has no information that any Montenegrin citizens are among the infected or suspected cases. Authorities were alerted by international health officials and are gathering more details.
All affected individuals showed flu-like symptoms such as fever; some also had gastrointestinal issues, extreme fatigue, or pneumonia. Hantavirus is usually transmitted through contact with infected rodent droppings or inhalation of contaminated particles, while human-to-human transmission is very rare.
The Institute is monitoring the situation and will update the public as more information becomes available, urging people to rely on official sources and avoid spreading unverified information.
